Who knew a lyric could cause such chaos? Ever since Nicki Minaj remixed Doja Cat’s “Say So” on May 1, fans have been breaking down her verses and trying their hardest to figure out who she threw shade at on the outro.
Over the past month or so, they have floated multiple names that turned out to be incorrect. But now, some think they have finally figured it out, pointing to Jennifer Lopez.
If you haven’t heard it, the barb comes around the 3:12 mark, where Nicki Minaj raps: “Why you talkin’ ’bout who body fake? With all them fillers in your face, you just full of hate/That real a** ain’t keep your n*gga home/Now you lookin’ silly, that’s word to silicone.”
It was initially suspected that she was talking about her rival Wendy Williams, as the TV host has been very critical of Nicki Minaj in recent months. However, Nicki Minaj denied that it was about Williams in a later message shared on social media.
Then fans guessed it was about Beyoncé
After Nicki Minaj shut down the speculation about Williams, fans suggested the lyrics might have been aimed at Beyoncé given that she’d rapped about having a “real a**” in the “Savage Remix,” which came out two days earlier than the “Say So” remix.
The rumors were fueled by the fact that the outro was added after an earlier version of the song leaked on streaming services. However, Nicki Minaj also appeared to shut the speculation down on Twitter.
Now fans think it is about Jennifer Lopez
In a viral Twitter thread that has since been deleted but has been screengrabbed and shared on Instagram, a fan suggested the line was about Lopez, citing past feud rumors between the artists.
The rumors began in 2015 when Nicki Minaj was accused of giving Lopez a shady look at the American Music Awards, where she shook her famous derrière to Nicki Minaj’s song “Anaconda.”
Nicki Minaj later insisted on Twitter that she did not, per Entertainment Tonight. But the thread says otherwise, alleging the two were secretly feuding over Nicki Minaj’s working relationship with choreographer Casper Smart, who dated Lopez from 2011 to 2016.
It goes on to claim that Nicki Minaj also shaded Lopez in her new song “Trollz” with 6ix9ine, where she raps about people still singing her songs, before switching to a 2019 interview where Lopez rapped the lyrics Nicki Minaj’s “A**” collaboration with Big Sean.
The post has since garnered thousands of likes and plenty of comments on Instagram. But not everyone believes the theory.
“I’m sorry but I’m not buying this. Nicki & Jlo are not even a thing & she can care less of her tbh. That line was probably whoever it applies,” read one comment.
“I just don’t understand why Nicki would bring some 2015 beef back up with jlo,” read another.
“NAHHHH I think she was talking [about] Beyonce PERIOD,” commented a third person.
As of writing, neither Nicki Minaj or Jennifer Lopez has commented on the speculation. But we’ll let you know if they do.
