How Matthew McConaughey Deals With Getting Older

Matthew McConaughey is a gem to the entertainment world. The multi-talented actor has been a screen giant for quite some time and keeps on keeping on, L-I-V-I-N, so to speak. While many may worry about ageism in Hollywood and how it affects getting roles, that seems to be the furthest thought from McConaughey’s mind. The actor has no problem taking on any role and rise to any challenge. He certainly hasn’t let getting older be an issue either. By taking on roles that are vastly different from each other, McConaughey has a unique way to deal with getting older.

Matthew McConaughey isn’t afraid of growing up

The actor stated during an interview with GQ that he references his aging with his acting. The actor began taking riskier roles as he got older. “As you get older, you’re supposed to get better. There should be an ascension. I was enjoying myself. My relationship with acting was fine. But like in any relationship, you need to shake things up. It didn’t mean what we’d been doing was less than. I just wanted a charge. Like, let’s throw a spark into this,” the actor claimed.

Matthew McConaughey revealed that at one point he did take a break from acting, growing more aware of the roles he took and turning down those that wouldn’t suit him. “I got much more selfish,” he says. “I’m a fan of the word selfish. When I say I have gotten a lot more self-ish, I mean I am less concerned with what people think of me. I’m not worried about how I’m perceived. Selfish has always gotten a bad rap. You should do it for you. I wanted new experiences,” the actor explained.

He knows what works

The actor has certainly picked his fair share of good roles. From starring in romantic comedies that helped solidify him as a “sex symbol” to taking on grittier roles, the actor has shown his strength through the characters he portrays. After returning from his quick hiatus about ten years ago, Matthew McConaughey has starred in several successful films and TV shows this decade, including Dallas Buyers Club, Free State of Jones, and the HBO crime anthology series, True Detective.

Each of the performances required a different level of acting from McConaughey. The actor lost a significant amount of weight for his role in Dallas Buyer Club, which earned him his first Academy Award. These days, McConaughey seems satisfied with the direction his career has taken. “I’m feeling very fulfilled. I’m in the clay in my career I’m turned on. I’m interested in things.es. I saw Dallas Buyers Club, he says. I liked it. I liked that guy,” McConaughey said of himself.
