‘Married at First Sight’ recap: Brandon fights with Taylor and show producers, Michael and Meka sleep separately, and Katie screams at Derek for flirting

Married at First Sight featured an explosive and disastrous couples’ retreat in which Brandon Reid stormed out on Taylor Dunklin and fought with the show’s producers, Katie Conrad screamed at Derek Sherman for allegedly flirting, and Michael Watson and Meka Jones slept in different bedrooms during Wednesday night’s episode on Lifetime.

An unprecedented five pairs of strangers were matched by returning Married at First Sight experts Pastor Calvin Roberson, Dr. Pepper Schwartz, and Dr. Viviana Coles to marry on Season 10 of the Lifetime reality series.

Michael, a 31-year-old education director from Washington, D.C., was shown marrying Meka, a 25-year-old category analyst from Baltimore, MD.

Brandon, a 34-year-old sales manager originally from the U.S. Virgin Islands who was raised in Washington, D.C., wed Taylor, a 27-year-old research scientist from Pittsburgh, PA.

Katie, a 26-year-old mental health professional from Woodbridge, VA, married Derek, a 26-year-old cyber security engineer from Maryland.

Jessica Studer, a 31-year-old nurse manager from Oak Harbor, OH, walked down the aisle to Austin Hurd, a 31-year-old network technician from Maryland.

And Zach Justice, a 32-year-old fitness professional from St. Mary’s, GA, wed Mindy Shiben, a 34-year-old figure skating coach from Frederick, MD.

However, at this point in the experiment, Zach and Mindy’s marriage was over.

Married at First Sight, Episode 14
The Married at First Sight broadcast began with only nine days remaining until “Decision Day.”

The Season 10 couples — minus Zach and Mindy — were headed to a couples’ retreat, where they were asked to focus on each other and gain new insight into their marriages and the other couples.

On the way to the retreat, Katie was still feeling confused and hung up on Derek’s high-school love poem since he had never expressed any similar feelings of love and passion to her.

Katie wasn’t sure she and Derek could get to that level of emotion at this point in their relationship.

Katie asked Derek what went wrong in his past relationships, and he said communication wasn’t great and he was looking for a woman with whom he could totally be himself.

Katie was feeling a little insecure but realized she’s valuable and deserves a man who will put a lot of effort into a relationship with her, and Derek agreed, saying she’s definitely a catch.

Brandon ignores Taylor on the ride to the retreat
As Katie, Derek, Austin and Jessica got settled into the house, Brandon vented to a Diary Cam about how Taylor had decided to spend a night in a hotel room with people he didn’t know.

Taylor allegedly told Brandon that she was only going out with her friends for 30-40 minutes but then he received a text the following morning with an apology from Taylor, who claimed she had fallen asleep in a hotel room with two of her friends.

Brandon didn’t know whether her friends were male or female, and he said Taylor’s story didn’t add up and he was “looking like a damn fool” at that point. Brandon wanted answers.

Brandon didn’t want to go to the retreat, but he agreed to go anyways. Since things weren’t right with Taylor, Brandon decided to just sleep on the car ride over.

“The ride up is just not everything I thought it would be. I’m really hoping this is not about me going out because he didn’t say he was upset or anything, but if you really are, then open up, speak your piece and spit it out — but he doesn’t… He doesn’t talk to me,” Taylor told the cameras.

Katie vents about Derek
Meanwhile, Jessica told Katie things were going well in her marriage, and Katie said she was certain Derek was “a good guy” but they lacked passion. Katie hoped passion would come with time, saying she connected well with Derek one day but then struggled to communicate with him the next.

“We just don’t vibe well a lot of the time,” Katie shared with Jessica. “I’ve just caught myself getting so annoyed with everything he does and says.”

Jessica admitted she and Austin had a fight over how much he needed to travel for work, but Katie suggested maybe distance would make them miss each other and make their relationship stronger.

Derek told Austin that he might have been looking for the wrong things in a person but he and Katie argued a lot over both silly and serious things. Derek and Austin joked about how it was difficult to figure out women and they needed to work on that.

Brandon was frustrated with Taylor and said their “lingering issue” needed to be resolved and talked through, and he still considered the Married at First Sight cast to be strangers — so he felt “trapped” at the retreat and wasn’t excited to mix and mingle.

Taylor told Katie and Jessica that she didn’t spend much time with Brandon, and both Katie and Taylor bonded over how their men allegedly never initiated physical intimacy. Taylor also confirmed she and Brandon had yet to have sex.

Michael basically ignores Meka
But Meka was feeling pretty good, saying she understood Michael more after having a conversation with her sister. Meka hoped to rebuild their foundation and just have fun with each other, although she wanted Michael to engage in conversation more.

Meka felt she and Michael hadn’t made much progress since “Recommitment Day” and had taken steps back, and Michael didn’t seem to talk to his wife much on the drive to the retreat.

Meka told the cameras she and Michael didn’t have a good car ride and once they arrived at the retreat, Michael took off with Brandon and left her by herself. Meka therefore spent some time with Taylor and the other girls.

Over a taco dinner, Derek and Taylor asked the group to take tequila shots. Michael and Brandon left the table, as Brandon said he didn’t want to take shots because he had to work the next day. When the guys walked away, Taylor said “f-ck them” out loud.

Katie gets jealous that Derek isn’t paying attention to her
Meanwhile, it was clear Derek was being loose and having fun. He and Taylor laughed about things at the table together, and Taylor bragged how she and Derek were “always on the same page” and he was hilarious.

Katie didn’t appreciate watching Derek’s and Taylor’s interaction and even snapped at Derek for liking the other wives more. She believed Derek wasn’t paying any attention to her.

“Taylor thinks he’s great and that just rubs me the wrong way,” Katie said in a confessional, adding that Taylor and Derek’s friendship made her want to throw up.

After Jessica announced she had said “I love you” to Austin, Derek told Austin that he should only say those words in return if he meant it 120 percent. That pissed Katie off, and she declared, “He’s such an assh-le.”

“Baby, I really, really like you,” Derek said.

Katie mocked Taylor by shouting about how great and awesome Derek was, adding, “I’m going to barf!”

Katie grew even more frustrated when Derek didn’t chase her down to talk and ask what was wrong. She said Derek stayed behind with Taylor, which upset her even more.

“It was a combination of, like, he doesn’t flirt with me. So it’s, like, don’t flirt with other girls in front of me,” Katie complained to Meka and Jessica.

Meka disagreed and noted that Derek was not flirting with other girls, but Katie vented about how Derek failed to make her feel special because he didn’t “do anything more” with her than what he was doing with Taylor.

Katie felt she was pulling all the weight in her relationship and it was annoying Derek was getting recognition for being such a great guy. Katie said Derek didn’t do or initiate anything and she was “worn the f-ck out.”

“He’s a good guy but that’s it,” Katie said.

“I think he’s a teachable guy,” Jessica suggested, saying Derek could probably come around with some good advice.

Katie complained that she had explained to Derek what she needed from him but saw no change, and it was clear she was losing hope in her marriage and her spouse.

“Do you think you can get there?” Meka asked.

“No,” Katie replied. “I’m doubting that more and more every day.”

Brandon complains to Michael about Meka
Brandon was then shown venting to Michael about how his marriage had been tough and Taylor didn’t take his feelings into consideration. He said he didn’t know what to do on “Decision Day” because it didn’t seem like Taylor wanted to be married.

And Taylor agreed the process had been very hard. Taylor told Derek and Austin that Brandon didn’t communicate with her or open up about his feelings. She felt she was putting so much energy and sacrifice into her relationship without getting it back.

Michael explained to Brandon that his uncle had died and Meka failed to comfort and support him as he cried.

Katie vents at Derek
Afterward, Katie finally confronted Derek about how she was feeling about his flirtatious nature. She said he treated her the same as he treated every other girl at the retreat.
