Royal snub: Why Pippa Middleton ‘didn’t want Meghan Markle at her wedding’

Meghan and Kate reunited yesterday for the first time since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s surprise ’declaration of independence’ in early January. Many noted the frostiness between Prince Harry and Prince William along with their wives as the four of them exchanged subdued greetings at the annual Commonwealth Day service in Westminster Abbey. This followed months of reported fallouts between Kate, William, Meghan and Harry.

Some critics claim that Kate and Harry’s previously close relationship has been seriously affected after months of friction between the couples – and some reports suggest this influenced Kate’s sister Pippa, too.

In December 2018, The Sun’s royal correspondent revealed that Kate’s younger sister was reluctant to invite Meghan to her wedding to James Matthews.

Journalist Emily Andrews wrote: “Meghan faced some opposition from the Middleton family, who didn’t want to invite her to Pippa’s wedding last May.

“They feared Meghan’s first public appearance with Prince Harry would overshadow the bride’s big day.”

Harry and Meghan started dating in the summer of 2016 but managed to keep their relationship under wraps.

However, by May 2017 the secret was just starting to get out, although they had not been seen together in public yet.

Despite the Middleton’s opposition, Harry apparently travelled 50 miles to pick Meghan up from Kensington Palace at the time – and drove the 50 miles back – so she could attend the evening reception in Pippa’s home village of Bucklebury.

A source told The Sun: “[Harry] left as discreetly as possible and travelled with her all the way back up showing just how serious he is about her.

“He didn’t want Meghan having to arrive alone, without him alongside her, at the reception.”

Harry’s presence at Pippa’s wedding was a surprise to some, as many speculated about a possible romance between the two at the time of Kate and William’s 2011 wedding.

Some have since speculated that Harry found a “Pippa Middleton-replica” in his wife.

Royal insider Duncan Larcombe told The Sun last year: “After the royal wedding, there was a discussion there was something romantic between Harry and Pippa, which was incorrect.

“But it’s quite funny to think that Harry is now married to somebody who is quite similar in temperament, personality and bubbliness to Pippa.”

Mr Larcombe claimed both women also have a passion for the “celebrity world” – which is a field many believe Meghan will return to now she has left the Royal Family.

However, any reported rivalry between Pippa and Meghan was put to bed when they attended a Wimbledon game in the summer with Kate.

Body language expert Judi James said that by seating Meghan in the middle of the Middleton sisters, they were trying to convey the image that the Duchess of Sussex was an integral member of the Firm.

However, the couple have since attended their last official royal engagement as senior royals, when they went to the Commonwealth Day service yesterday.
